My Story

After 30 years of nursing I decided to retrain and follow my interests of hypnotherapy and counselling.  It was whilst nursing that I could see how closely the mind and body are linked and how state of mind impacts on good and poor physical health.

I am able to offer Person Centred Pluralistic Counselling and Hypnotherapy to my clients.  You do not have to have counselling and hypnotherapy together, but they can be mutually beneficial so it may be appropriate to have both.  This is something that we can discuss before starting sessions and whilst working together.

As a Pluralistic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor I work from a person-centred perspective and can offer a range of counselling techniques and tools in the sessions.

Hypnotherapy is amazing!  It can help with so many different emotional and physical issues and I have received beneficial hypnotherapy myself, so I can talk from personal experience. I have received some amazing and positive feedback from my clients, and one even asked me if I was a miracle worker! I told them that I wasn’t, and that they had done all the work, I had just given their subconscious mind the information that it needed to help them. My clients have told me how life changing hypnotherapy sessions have been for not only themselves but, their friends and family too.

What are Counselling and Hypnotherapy?

Counselling and Hypnotherapy are talking therapies.

Hypnotherapy is a form of deep relaxation that takes you to a trance-like state.  We all go into a trance several times a day - when you are fully engrossed in a tv programme or film and you are feeling the emotions of the characters, you are in a trance; when you are driving your car and can't remember part of the journey or if the traffic lights were on green, you are in a trance; when you day-dream you are in a trance.  Trance is a natural state and nothing to fear.

By taking you into trance using relaxation techniques, your subconscious brain or mind is able to hear what is being said.  The subconscious part of the brain or mind consists of approximately 90% of the brain.  It is the part of the brain that stores all of your learning and experiences throughout your life (from birth) and creates your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.  Whilst most of these messages are positive and helpful, for example how to ride a bike, how to drive a car, some are negative and unhelpful for example, fear of spiders, being anxious or scared, reacting badly to something or someone, overeating, smoking.

Once you are in a trance like state I can give your subconscious mind or brain personalised messages to help to re-programme or re-wire your thought processes and behaviours into more positive and helpful ones, thereby helping you to overcome your anxiety, your phobias, your low self-esteem, lack of confidence, to stop overeating, to stop smoking for example.  Your sub-conscious mind is so very receptive and can be re-programmed or re-wired to help you in positive ways only when your conscious brain (approximately 10%) is quiet and this happens during hypnosis.

(You can find commonly asked Q’s and A’s about hypnotherapy on this site.)

Hypnotherapy is typically delivered for up to an hour each time over a number of sessions with the exceptions of: smoking cessation which is either a single 2 hour session, or 4 x1 hour sessions and hypno-gastric band which is a total of 4 x1 hour sessions.

Questions and Answers

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses relaxation techniques including breathing and muscle relaxation to help you to deeply relax to a trance-like state.

Why do I need to be relaxed?

When awake and fully conscious, our conscious brain (10% of our mind) or mind argues with things that it hears and sees. Our conscious brain works at our fastest brain speed – there are 4 speeds in total, and it is necessary to relax you to slow down your brain speed to temporarily shut up your conscious brain. Your subconscious brain or mind (90% of our mind) can then be fully accessed.

What is the subconscious brain or mind?

This is the part of us that is responsible for all of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Throughout our lives we learn, and all of this learning and memory is stored deep within our subconscious brain. How we react to things is down to our subconscious brain. Sometimes we act or respond in negative and unhelpful ways, and this is all due to our life experiences and learning.

Why do you need to access the subconscious brain or mind?

New, positive and more helpful messages and suggestions can be fed directly to the subconscious brain, changing the ways in which we think, feel and behave. The subconscious mind is reprogrammed to rid it of unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
There is nothing to be feared, and you remain in control at all times.

Will you make me cluck like a chicken or dance with a broom?

That is part of stage hypnotism for entertainment purposes. No, I will not make you do things like this. You remain in control at all times.

Will I tell you things that I don’t want to whilst hypnotised?

No, you will only tell me what you want to tell me as you remain in control at all times.

Will I definitely wake up again?

Yes, you will wake up from hypnosis.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends entirely on your individual reasons for seeking help through hypnotherapy, an average number of sessions is between 6 and 8. Some people need less and some more, but this will be determined by your progress once you start having hypnotherapy.
